Code 28 in Device Manager for Zune

I was just browsing through the forums on Zune.net. I noticed that there were ongoing issues with the Zune Device, that is not recognized by the Software.

The most common issue is Error Code 28 on the Device Manager.

Here is the error that reads when you open device manager.

“The drivers for this device are not installed. (code 28)”

Here is the steps that can be followed to resolve the issue

1) Unplug the device from the computer.
2) Click on Start, in the start search, type “Driverstore” (Without Quotes).
3) Go to File Repository\wpdmtp.inf_3eba85bf
4) Right Click on wpdmtp.inf (or wpdmtp), then click on Copy.
5) Click on Start, in the start search, type “C:\Windows\inf” (Without Quotes)
6) Click on Edit (in the menu) on the window and click on Paste.
7) Close all the Windows and connect the Zune device.

Note: If the device itself not detected then you have to install the drivers manually
This suggestion may apply only for Windows Vista

Happy Zuning..

    You have to disconnect the Zune device from the computer
    Click Start -> Run -> type c:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wpdmtp.inf_3eba85bf -> Ok

    You will see the folder wpdmtp.inf_3eba85bf Opened

    Search for wpdmtp.inf file. Right click on it and click copy.
    Click Start->Run-> C:\windows\inf -> Ok

    You will see the folder inf opened

    right click on the empty space inside the inf folder and click paste.

    If it ask you whether to overwrite click okay and reboot the computer.

    Now connect back the Zune device..

    I tried this and it didn’t work for me. This is what I did.

    After sifting through a bajillion things… I did something I should’ve before. Just look a the issue and fix it myself. So… I went to my old computer with the latest zune software that actually still worked (this will only work if you have a computer that still works when you plug your zune into it) when I plugged my zune in and I copied the c:\program files\zune\dirvers\zune folder to a thumb drive. I went to the other computer and deleted the exact same folder and replaced it with the folder i put on the thumb drive. No more issues. No more restarting. Praise the lord my Shepard and savior, IT WORKS!!!! Now go forth and cast out those demons.

    Very nice. I’d like to ask some help regarding the same error under device manager code 18 (Zune). My OS is vista and I cant roll back WMP 11 and unistall WMF11 runtime. I tried updating and reinstalling the drivers but it is saying “the best driver software for your device is already installed” but still not detected by the software.

    Thanks in advance.
