Prevent or Protect computer from Conficker Worm / Virus attack - Remove Conficker Worm / Virus from your computer

What is Conficker Worm / Virus

· Conficker is a worm that can affect your computer and spread itself on the Network without your interaction.

· It spread through file sharing on the network and removable disk when it execute Auto run function when it is plugged in to USB drive

· Conficker worm disable important services on your computer.

· Conficker prevent computer from doing Windows Update and Antivirus update by disabling update service on your computer.

How to protect from being affected by Conficker Worm

· US-CERT recommended that Windows users apply Microsoft security patch MS08-067 to help provide protection against the worm.

· This patch prevents an attacker from remotely taking control of an infected computer system and installing additional malicious software.

· Keep your Antivirus updated and perform a complete scan.

· Disable Autoplay features (Autoplay is the pop-up that ask you what to do when you plug in any USB drive or when you insert CD/DVD). Click here to disable Autorun features.

Remove Conficker Worm

· Do complete Virus scan with the updated Antivirus software

· Remove the Scheduled Task.

Click Start -> Run -> CMD -> type AT /Delete /Yes and press enter

· Remove the Startup entries from the registry

Click Start -> Run -> Regedit -> Ok

Navigate to following locations and remove suspected entries from the left pane of the windows

§ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

§ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

· Make sure TCP Receive Window Auto-tuning is enabled for Windows Vista

Click Start -> Run -> CMD -> type netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal press enter

After performing these steps do Windows Update (http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/ )

Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. - Error 80048820

Following error message appear when signing in to Windows Live or MSN Messenger

We can’t sign you in to Windows Live Messenger

Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

When you try to login with Windows Messenger you may get .net service is unavailable or even when login to Hotmail account

Cause for the problem

Incorrect Date and Time settings

Suggestions

1. Double Click on the Time at the System tray (Lower right corner of the screen)

2. Adjust the Date and Time (Make sure Year is correct)

3. Click Okay

4. Try signing in to Windows Live or MSN Messenger

No sound on Streaming Videos through Flash Player - Unable to hear sound on flash player

Reason for the Cause:

Could be because of incorrect Flash Player settings or Sound Files corruption or even due to conflict with the add-on installed.

Suggestion:

1. Check the Sound settings on Flash Player by right click on the Video

2. Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Multimedia -> Place a check on Play sound in web pages

3. Uninstall the flash player by going to Start -> Control Panel ->Add or Remove programs (If Vista then Programs and Features) -> Double click on Flash Player to uninstall

4. Install the flash player from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

5. Restart the computer and trying playing the video

If the above steps fail then Click Here to download the registry fix. Save the file in to the desktop and double to merge with the registry.

Restart the computer and now you should hear sound on Streaming Videos

* Make sure you take the backup of your registry or create restore point before merging the registry values.

10 ways to speed up your computer - Windows XP / Windows Vista

1. Uninstall unnecessary / unused programs

2. Clear Temp and Prefetch files

3. Disable unwanted startup items from being starting when the computer boots

4. Disable unwanted services from being starting when the computer boots

5. Disconnect the external devices when it is not used

6. Shutdown the computer properly – Avoid the power button to turn off (Hard Shut down)

7. Scan daily for Virus and Spyware

8. Remove unused / unnecessary shortcut to the programs from the Desktop

9. Avoid saving files on the desktop. Instead save it to additional partition or My Documents

10. Disk Defragment

1. Uninstall unnecessary / unused programs

To remove unnecessary or unused programs from the computer

For Windows XP

1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs

2. Double click on the program you wish to remove one by one

For Windows Vista

1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features

2. Double click on the program you wish to remove one by one

2. Delete all the files and close the window

3. Click Start -> Run -> type %TEMP% -> Ok

4. Delete all the files and close the window

5. Click Start -> Run -> type PREFETCH -> Ok

2. Click Startup Tab

3. Uncheck the program that you don’t want to start when the computer boots. If you are not sure, you can disable everything except Antivirus software

4. Click Ok and Restart the computer

3. Uncheck Hide all Microsoft Services (It can be found besides Ok and Cancel button)

Disconnect the devices Printer, USB Headset, Scanner etc., from the computer. Because when the computer completes the boot process it will also check for drivers and connection status for the external devices which will increase the boot time.

6. Shutdown the computer properly – Avoid the power button to turn off (Hard Shut down)

Sometimes we tend to Shutdown the computer by pushing the power button directly. We have to avoid this which might affect the services closing down properly which might results in slow boot

7. Scan daily for Virus and Spyware

Scan the computer daily for Spyware or adware check which will avoid the slow boot. You can download the free software from www.lavasoft.com

8. Remove unused / unnecessary shortcut to the programs from the Desktop

More we install programs, more shortcuts you would find on the desktop. It is not harm to remove them as you can always open the program from the start menu. Because during the boot process it also takes time to load all the desktop icons.

9. Avoid saving files on the desktop. Instead save it to additional partition or My Documents

Instead of saving all the files to the desktop you can save the files under My Documents or different partitions to avoid latency when booting the computer

10. Disk Defragment at least in a month

Hard disk store data in sectors and it is scattered. When we do Disk defragment, data stored will be categorized and moved in order which will increase the performance.
