Error code 18 in device manager for Zune Device

July 21st, 2008 Mitr4all No comments

Hi Guys,

The other day, I purchased a new Zune 80-GB device. It is a really cool device in the market for MP3 players. As I was going through the forums and pages, many people were not satisfied with the support being offered due to which many hesitate to get the device.

Okay, let me come back to the issue which I encountered on my computer. I got the device, unpacked it, installed the required package, and connected the device to the computer, but the Zune software was not able to detect the device.

So, I went in and checked the Device Manager, was able to see the Zune device with an exclamation mark. When I checked the properties for Zune device inDevice Manager, I got the below error message:

“Reinstall the drivers for this device (Code 18).”

As the error states, I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled it, but was still getting the same error message. So, I did some research on it and found out that the Windows Media Format was the culprit. So, I implemented the following steps to fix the issue,

* Disconnected the Zune Device from Computer.
* Went to Add or Remove Programs.
* Uninstalled the programs in the following order:
o Zune Language Packs.
o Zune Program.
o Windows Media Player 11 (after uninstalling Windows Media Player, restart the computer).
o Windows Media Format 11 Runtime (if you get this, you will have to restart the computer again).
* Downloaded and installed Windows Media Player and Zune Software.
* Connected the Zune Device to the computer and voila!!! it was detected on the computer and the Zune software.

Happy Zuning.

Code 28 in Device Manager for Zune

July 21st, 2008 Mitr4all 4 comments

I was just browsing through the forums on Zune.net. I noticed that there were ongoing issues with the Zune Device, that is not recognized by the Software.

The most common issue is Error Code 28 on the Device Manager.

Here is the error that reads when you open device manager.

“The drivers for this device are not installed. (code 28)”

Here is the steps that can be followed to resolve the issue

1) Unplug the device from the computer.
2) Click on Start, in the start search, type “Driverstore” (Without Quotes).
3) Go to File Repository\wpdmtp.inf_3eba85bf
4) Right Click on wpdmtp.inf (or wpdmtp), then click on Copy.
5) Click on Start, in the start search, type “C:\Windows\inf” (Without Quotes)
6) Click on Edit (in the menu) on the window and click on Paste.
7) Close all the Windows and connect the Zune device.

Note: If the device itself not detected then you have to install the drivers manually
This suggestion may apply only for Windows Vista

Happy Zuning..

Device Manager And Network Connections Looks Empty / Blank after installing SP3

July 21st, 2008 bala No comments

After installing SP3, there are several issues with both Microsoft and Non-Microsoft applications. One common issue is with the device manager if you have Norton 2008 installed on the computer.

As usual, Norton blames Microsoft and Microsoft blames Norton, but the end users are facing the trouble.

Here are the steps to resolve this issue by uninstalling Norton

Note : Before you uninstall Norton please log on to the page given below to learn how to take back your product key.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton2008.nsf/docid/2007082908475279?Open&docid=2005033108162039&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid

Uninstall Norton by downloading the removal tool from here,

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Reboot the computer and check the status of the Device Manager and Network Connections.

If problem persists still then follow the steps given below (please do not try the steps if you are not comfortable with registry.)

Start -> Run -> Regedit -> Ok.
Locate HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Enum\Root\LEGACY_LIVEUPDATE_NOTICE
and delete Legacy Live Update Notice key (where x is a number).
Locate HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlset\Enum\Root\LEGACY_LIVEUPDATE_NOTICE delete Legacy Live Update Notice key
Reboot the computer and check the status

I am sure that your issue will be resolved by following the above steps.

Songs skips at the end - Windows Media Player 11

July 21st, 2008 bala No comments

I see songs get skipped on Windows Media Player at the end of the track. This happens mainly on the Sigmatel sound device. We will be able to resolve the issue if we disable the enhancement for sound device.

To do this follow the below steps,

1. Click start.
2. Go to control panel.
3. Open sound.
4. Under the playback tab, right click on the speaker which you see as default device
5. Click properties.
6. Go to enhancements tab.
7. Select “disable all enhancements.”

We may also need to reinstall the sound card driver from the device manager if the above steps doesn’t work.

I’ll appreciate if you can leave comments if the problem persists.
