How To Handle Pop-Up In Firefox

July 21st, 2008 peter Comments off

One of the advantages of Firefox is that it automatically blocks pop-ups.

Generally, blocking the pop-up is a good action, but in some sites, the pop-up page would have some relevant information which is needed by us, and thus we would have to retrieve those blocked pop-ups.

Whenever a pop-up is blocked, Firefox alerts us through a yellow bar which appears at the top of the web page. We can click anywhere on the yellow bar and choose whether to allow it or not. It has an option of maintaining a list of sites from which pop-ups can be allowed.

To select web sites from which pop-ups should be allowed, follow the below steps:

1. Go to Tools - Options.

2. From the column on your left, select web features.

3. Select on allowed sites across from block pop-up windows.

4. Add or remove a site and select OK.

5. To add a site, enter the URL of the site where pop-ups should be allowed. Example: www.yahoo.com - “Allow” - OK.

6. To remove a web site, select the web site from the list, and select “remove site” - OK.

Verifying wireless internet access in Iphone

July 21st, 2008 dinesh.k No comments

If you are trying to access wireless internet using iPhone here are the basic steps for verifying and troubleshooting to join and access a wireless network.

The first step is to look for the wireless signal symbol which is present on the left top corner of the screen .

If there is no wireless symbol on top, and the phone hasn’t joined any wireless connection then start working on accessing and connecting to wireless network.

To join a wireless network,

1. Go to the settings—– Wi Fi and check for Networks (network name/SSID) scanned.

2. Tap on the wireless network you want to join.

3. Now, check whether you got the wireless signal icon on top left corner of the screen, and if the icon is present try to access the internet.

If you see the icon but still if you are not able to access the internet.

1. Go to settings — WiFi networks and tap on more next to the network, where you will get a screen with tabs IP, BootP, and static.

2. Check if you have IP address (numbers) when you tap IP tab, and if there are no numbers, tap on Renew lease, if you still don’t get the IP address then it could be because of,

a. The wireless network is secured so we need to have wireless network security password or
b. The wireless network has mac address filter where we need to add our Iphone mac address to the router.

Mac address of Iphone can be obtained from settings—-General—About

Speed up your internet connection with Windows XP

June 21st, 2008 bala 1 comment

If you are like me and would like to get the maximum mileage out of your broadband connection, you will find the following tweaks useful.

The first tweak kind of counters Windows XP’s default setting, which allows programs to reserve upto 20% of available bandwidth.

1. Log in as Administrator
2. Start->Run->type gpedit.msc
3. Click “Local Computer Policy” branch.
4. Click “Administrative Templates” branch.
5. Click “Network Branch”.
6. Select “QoS Packet Scheduler” in left window.
7. In right window double-click the “Limit Reservable Bandwidth” setting.
8. On setting tab check the “Enabled” item.
9. Where it says “Bandwidth limit %” change it to read 0. A reboot might be required for the above settings to take effect.

The second tweak is useful if you have a single PC connected to the internet (do not try this on networked computers-which use file and print sharing).

Also if you installed a seperate NIC driver (or if you have one of those recovery image CD’s from Dell/HP and you are not sure if NIC driver is built into Win XP)-DO NOT TRY THIS.

1. Right click “My Network Places” and choose properties.
2. Select the connection (Local area or PPoe connection if you have DSL) then from menu choose “Advanced” then “Advanced Settings.” Uncheck File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks. Click OK.
3. From the Windows XP CD in the support directory from the support cab, extract the file netcap.exe and place it in a directory on your hard drive .
4. Next, open up a command prompt window and change directories to where you put netcap.exe. then type “netcap/?” It will list some commands that are available for netcap and a netmon driver will be installed. At the bottom you will see your adapters. One will be for LAN and the other will be for WAN something or other.
5. Next type “netcap/Remove.” This will remove the netmon driver.
6. Open up Control Panel ->System->Dev Man and look at your network adapters. You should now see two of them and one will have a yellow ! on it. Right-click on the one without the yellow ! and choose uninstall. YES! You are uninstalling your network adapter, continue with the uninstall. Do not restart yet.
7. Check your connection properties to make sure that no connection exists. If you get a wizard, just cancel it out. Now re-start the machine.
8. After re-start, go to your connection properties again and you should have a new connection called “Local area connection 2.” Highlight the connection, then at the menu bar choose “Advanced” then “Advanced Settings.” Uncheck File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks. Click OK.
9. Choose connection properties and uncheck the “QOS” box.
10. Re-start the machine.

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 Beta from Windows XP SP3

June 21st, 2008 Mitr4all 10 comments

Hi guys,

I installed Internet Explorer 8 Beta on my computer and then installed the latest Service Pack from Microsoft (SP3). After installing Windows SP Service Pack 3, I was not able to uninstall Internet Explorer 8 Beta.

I had some issues with the IE8 Beta Product and I wanted to uninstall it. So, I went to Add or Remove Programs, searched for the IE8 Beta to uninstall it, but I didn’t have an option to uninstall it. Tried to search the internet for some kind of uninstall tools and Knowledge Base Articles, and one search string took me to a KB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950719/en-us) which said that I need to uninstall Windows XP service Pack 3 and then uninstall Internet Explorer 8 and then reinstall Service Pack 3. I followed the KB religiously and after that I was not able to boot to my desktop. I then had to do some more troubleshooting to first fix my copmuter from that no boot situation. Thus, don’t try the steps that are in the Knowledge Base.

Steps to uninstall Internet Explorer 8 Beta from the computer:

Note: These steps are only for Windows XP with Service Pack 3.

1) Click on Start, click on my computer.

2) Browse to C:\WINDOWS\

Note: You will have to unhide the files and folders:

a. Start Windows Explorer. To do this, click Start, click Run, type userinit.exe , and then click OK.

b. Click Tools, and then click Folder Options.

c. Click the View tab.

d. Click Advanced Settings.

e. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, click to clear the Hide Protected

Operating System files (recommended) check box, andthen click OK.

3) Double click on the folder “ie8″.
4) Double click on the folder “spuninst”.
5) Double click on the executable “spuninst.exe”.

Follow the prompts and then click on “Finish” to restart the computer.

Your Internet Explorer will roll back to the previous version (IE7 or IE6).

Enjoi ur Day…
