How to backup if the computer doesn’t boot in any of the modes - Windows Vista

September 18th, 2008 bala No comments

Recently I came across this situation that I couldn’t boot the computer in any of the modes.

Tried Startup Repair from the WinRE, it failed to boot.
Tried System Restore from WinRE, that said there are no system restore points created.

Luckily I had Flash drive by which I was able to transfer my datas from the repaired computer through Command Prompt in WinRE

Follow the steps below to backup data from the WinRE on Windows Vista Computer

1. Insert the Windows Vista DVD
2. Respond to the message when it says “Press any key to boot..” to boot the computer from the DVD
3. Select English and click Next on language selection screen
4. Click “Repair your computer” at the bottom
5. If it ask you select the OS to repair continue with that
6. Click Command Prompt from the System Recovery Options
7. Simply type C: and press enter, to access the local drive
8. Insert the Flash drive or External Hard drive and use the copy commands to transfer the data

Eg : To copy the whole directory
Type the following commands

Xcopy “users\your account name\Documents” “F:\Documents” /s/i

This will copy the whole Documents folder to the flash drive, provided the drive letter for your flash drive is F:\

Good Luck

Windows Home Server - Is it worth buying?

July 21st, 2008 bala No comments

Microsoft had introduced Server based computer to the Home users for the first time. Is this what people were waiting for?

Microsoft says it is worth buying it, because

- it automatically take a backup of computer

- it allows you to access your computer outside the network

- they give the personalised website to store the pictures and files

- it helps you to organize digital files

- simple restore of complete PC

but, what difference it makes from Windows Vista. When their own product Windows Vista does everthing that listed above including restoring file version,

then what is the need for a separte Home Server.

Though it might be Small offices has less employees.
